Understanding Surrogacy and Gestational Carriers

Surrogacy involves a woman, referred to as a surrogate or gestational carrier, carrying a pregnancy on behalf of another individual or couple, known as the intended parents. There are two main types of surrogacy:

  • Gestational Surrogacy: The surrogate carries an embryo created using the intended parents’ eggs and sperm or donor gametes. The surrogate has no genetic link to the child.

Gestational surrogacy is the preferred option for its clear legal framework and the separation of genetic relationships between the surrogate and the child.

Who Can Consider Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is a suitable option for:

1

Medical Reasons

  • Women without a uterus due to congenital absence or surgical removal.

  • Uterine abnormalities, such as T-shaped or severely scarred uteruses, which make carrying a pregnancy impossible.

  • Medical conditions where pregnancy poses significant risks to the woman’s health, including:

    • Severe heart disease

    • Renal failure

    • Aggressive cancers requiring treatment

    • HELLP syndrome during previous pregnancies

2

LGBTQ+ Couples and Individuals

  • Gay male couples needing both an egg donor and gestational carrier.

  • Single men or women desiring biological children.

3

Others

Couples who have experienced multiple IVF failures due to uterine complications.

Legal and Medical Guidelines for Surrogacy in TRNC

In compliance with the 57/2014 Law on Human Cells, Tissue, and Organ Transplantation, the following regulations apply to surrogacy and gestational carriers:

1

Eligibility Criteria for Gestational Carriers

  • The surrogate must be between 21 and 40 years of age.

  • Identity and medical information of the surrogate must be submitted.

  • Additional tests requested by the Coordination Committee must be provided.

2

Eligibility Criteria for Intended Parents

Surrogacy is permitted if any of the following conditions are met:

  • Congenital absence of the uterus.

  • Surgical removal of the uterus due to benign or malignant conditions.

  • Severe uterine abnormalities (e.g., T-shaped uterus, hypoplastic uterus).

  • Medical conditions that make pregnancy unsafe (e.g., severe cardiac or renal diseases).

3

Authorization and Counseling

  • Both intended parents and the gestational carrier must sign a comprehensive Consent and Information Form prepared by the Coordination Committee.

  • Surrogacy arrangements must be registered with the Authorized Authority.

The Surrogacy Process

    • Intended parents can work with our affiliated agencies to find an anonymous carrier. A gestational carrier is a healthy woman with a proven history of successful pregnancies who will carry the pregnancy to term and deliver the baby on behalf of the intended parents.

    • All carriers undergo thorough medical evaluations, psychological assessments, and legal clearance.

    • Clear legal agreements ensure transparency and define the responsibilities of all parties involved.

    • Counseling sessions help both the intended parents and the carrier navigate the emotional aspects of surrogacy.

    • Embryos are created via IVF using the intended parents' gametes or donor eggs and sperm.

    • The gestational carrier undergoes a synchronized cycle to prepare her uterus for embryo transfer.

    • Regular prenatal care and monitoring are provided to ensure the health of the surrogate and baby.

    • After the embryo transfer, the gestational carrier will undergo a blood test to confirm pregnancy. Once pregnancy is successfully established, she will transition her care to an obstetrician-gynecologist for the remainder of the pregnancy.

    • The gestational carrier will carry the pregnancy to term, delivering the baby to the intended parent(s) upon birth.

FAQs for Surrogacy & Gestational Carriers

Can't find the answer to your question? Contact us here.

  • Traditional surrogacy involves the surrogate's egg, making her the biological mother, whereas gestational surrogacy uses the intended parents' or donors' eggs and sperm, meaning the surrogate has no genetic link to the child.

  • Yes, if both the intended mother and father can provide healthy eggs and sperm, they can be used to create embryos for transfer to the surrogate.

  • Surrogacy in Cyprus operates under a liberal framework, allowing embryo transfers to surrogates for medical reasons. Contracts outline all parties' responsibilities to ensure ethical practices.

  • You can either bring your own surrogate or select one from our database of thoroughly screened candidates, matched based on your preferences and requirements.

  • Yes, if your egg or sperm is used, the child will inherit your genetic material. The surrogate provides a nurturing environment for pregnancy but does not contribute genetically.

  • Surrogates are extensively screened, including medical evaluations, psychological assessments, and lifestyle checks, to ensure they are physically and emotionally prepared for the journey.

  • The timeline varies but usually takes 12–18 months, including medical preparation, embryo transfer, pregnancy, and delivery.

  • The cost of surrogacy varies depending on medical procedures, surrogate compensation, legal requirements, and additional services like travel and accommodation. At Nicosia Fertility, we provide detailed cost breakdowns and guidance to help you plan your budget with confidence.

  • Yes, family members or friends can act as surrogates if they meet the medical and psychological criteria. This option can reduce costs and foster a closer connection during the process.

  • We provide full support throughout the journey, including medical guidance, legal counseling, emotional support, and coordination of all logistical aspects to ensure a smooth experience.
