Changes in Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy, your body develops a "defense system" to protect your baby, which can cause noticeable changes in the color, consistency, and odor of your vaginal discharge.

What Are the Most Important Changes?

During pregnancy, vaginal discharge often becomes more abundant. This excessive discharge, known as leukorrhea, may require you to wear panty liners to protect your underwear.

The discharge may be light yellow or almost white, with little odor and a watery consistency similar to what you experience during your menstrual cycle. However, be cautious if the discharge becomes yellowish or greenish, develops a bad smell, or causes burning, itching, or redness around the vaginal area. These symptoms could indicate an infection, and you should consult your gynecologist.

Does Vaginal Discharge Change During Different Stages of Pregnancy?

Yes, the characteristics of vaginal discharge can vary depending on the stage of your pregnancy:

  • First Trimester: You may notice light bleeding, which can be confused with menstruation. This bleeding is a sign that the baby is being implanted into the uterus, so it is not a cause for concern.

  • Second Trimester: Sometimes, vaginal discharge may be accompanied by bleeding. If this occurs, consider whether you had sexual intercourse or a gynecological exam that day, as these activities may be the cause. If the discharge is brown and linked to these activities, it’s usually less concerning than if the bleeding is bright red and causes pain. Regardless, it's always best to consult your gynecologist or visit the emergency room for a proper assessment.

  • Third Trimester: Toward the end of pregnancy, you may undergo a test for Streptococcus Agalactiae, a common bacterium that, while typically harmless, can occasionally cause postpartum infections. If you test positive, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to be administered during delivery.

Additionally, you might notice the expulsion of the mucus plug, sometimes tinged with blood, which indicates that delivery is approaching.
